Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metro Area Immigration

Population

The Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,083,977 in 1970 to 2,226,009 in 2010. That was an increase of 105.4 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 43,179 in 1970 to 277,947 in 2010. That was an increase of 543.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 4.0 percent to 12.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 87.2 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the principal factor adding population increase in the first period, and B-D had that role in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the primary factor in population increase in the second period.
